Refrigerator Repairs
You can increase the life of your refrigerator, and avoid the need for refrigerator repairs by taking time to clean and maintain your appliance. Make sure that you clean the condenser coils at least once every 3 months. These coils will be located either under the refrigerator or behind it. Look at your produce manual, and remove food debris from the drain hole, and clean out the drain pan. Make sure that the gasket on the door of the refrigerator and freezer are sealed tightly. Look for cracked gaskets, or gaskets that have come loose. If you find that the doors of your refrigerator don't close automatically, you could be wasting precious energy. Make sure that your refrigerator is level. Clean gaskets with vinegar to avoid mold growth.
If your refrigerator isn't cooling properly, check if the thermostat knob is set to a proper reading. If there is nothing wrong with the thermostat reading, check if the compressor motor is making a humming noise. A humming compressor motor indicates that the refrigerator is running. A refrigerator that doesn't cool could indicate problems with the thermostat, the compressor, defrost timer or the condenser fan motor. If your refrigerator has poor cooling capacity, it could be the result of frost accumulation on the evaporator coils. You can get rid of the frost by turning the thermostat off, and leaving the refrigerator doors open for two days. When the frost build up has melted away, set the thermostat back to normal. Poor cooling can also result from dust build up on the condenser coils. To clean the condenser coils, disconnect the refrigerator. Use a condenser brush to remove any dust, lint, pet dander etc.
You can minimize the need for refrigerator repairs by performing periodic maintenance. In case of a self defrosting refrigerator, remember to clean the drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator regularly. The melted water collecting in the drain pan can lead to mold growth. Keep the coils of the refrigerator clean. You can find these behind or underneath the refrigerator. Make sure that the gaskets on the refrigerator door are sealed tight. To check if your refrigerator door gaskets are tight enough slip a piece of paper in between the door and the refrigerator, and close the door shut. Try to slip the paper out. If you can pull the paper out easily, then your gasket needs changing. My Kenmore dryer, about 8 years old, is heating but not tumbling--I believe it needs a new belt. Thanks |
I just bought a home and it was bank owned. The bank installed new appliances to sell, but it seems they installed the fridge incorrectly. Will not get cold and styrofoam still attached where I dont think it is supposed to me. I don't want to break anything. |
